Calendar Terminology

  • Calendar Group: The Events Calendar displays events belonging to particular departments, centers, institutes, labs and groups. Each one of these is referred to as a Calendar Group.
  • Event Type: An Event Type is a broad classification of an event. Calendar publishers choose from a standard set of event types; at least one event type is required per event.
  • Tag: A tag is a helpful way to further define and categorize events beyond Event Type. Tags are created by calendar publishers and are not required.
  • Locations or Places: Each event is assigned a location by the calendar publisher. A location may be a building, a room within a building, a street address, or a combination thereof.
  • RSS: RSS is a format for delivering syndicated web content via a feed. RSS Feed Readers or News Aggregators like Feedly are required in order to subscribe to or read an RSS feed. RSS is a calendar subscription option.
  • ICAL: iCal (short for iCalendar) is a computer file format which allows users to send meeting requests and calendar events other users. iCal is supported by a large number of products, including Google Calendar, Outlook, and Apple Calendar. ICAL is a calendar subscription option.
